| Hoa Binh (meaning peace in English) is the provincial capital of the province of the same name located 75km northwest of Hanoi. Hoa Binh town is about five km from Southeast Asia's biggest hydroelectric construction on the Song Da (Black River) valley. The region with its scenic valleys is home to many ethnic minority hill-tribes, including the H'mong, Dao, Thai and Muong. Life in the remote valleys of Mai Chau remains much the same as it has done for centuries. |
| Muong Lay - Hoa Binh |
There is no real main site in this province - it is mainly interesting for the mountain scenery and minorities (on the road from Dien Bien Phu, it is mostly H’mong, but as tourists get towards Phong Tho, there is a huge variety of different ethnic groups). |
| Son La - Hoa Binh |
This province is rich in minority villages, many of which seem to be completely untouristed. One valley in particular, just half an hour northeast of Son La, had at least 7-8 Thai villages along a 12-km stretch. |
